Cocktail Hour: Sipping and Savoring at The Burgundy Lounge at the Starlight Motor Inn

Many people have spent countless hours at this infamous watering hole. Stories have been told and memories have been made over the years throughout its decades-long history.

Now, a new generation has the opportunity to indulge in a cocktail hour that is like no other — at The Burgundy Lounge at the Starlight Motor Inn in North Charleston, SC.

The History of The Burgundy Lounge

The motel was originally built back in 1961. And while it offered guests a dip in the pool and a place to rest, there was no place to unwind — until 1966 when The Burgundy Lounge was added.

It had long served as a popular spot for Navy sailors and contractors from the former base site that was located nearby. However, when the base closed in the 1990s. It wasn’t much longer after that when the entire motel, including the lounge, was closed to the public and condemned.

Today, just follow the carpeted stairs in the lobby and they will lead you here. This lounge is a dimly-lit, laid-back soulful joint where you can relax to the sounds of live music while sipping on something good. Really good.

New owners are bringing life back to this Historical Landmark.

They have kept the original name for The Burgundy Lounge. In the renovation, the original bar stools, booths, chairs, and tables were kept. Everything has been carefully collected and put together in a way that would stay true to the history of the lounge and the motel.

Featured Cocktails at The Burgundy Lounge

What would The Burgundy Lounge be without a few featured cocktails? They are a mix of classy, sophistication, and refreshment. Let’s take a closer look.

The Seabee. It is impossible to revitalize The Burgundy Lounge without remembering its history — including the many sailors who considered this place their favorite bar. So, this drink is for them. It’s a mix of tequila, Ting (consider it Jamaican sunshine in a can), and fresh lime juice served on the rocks with a salty rim. Pure refreshment.

The Lucille. If sultry was a drink, its name would be The Lucille —- a ruby red sloe gin fizz with fresh squeezed lemon juice and club soda. It goes down easily.

Old Fashioned. For a lounge that has been brought back to life from years ago, drinking an Old Fashioned just seems fitting. What is it? Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Angostura bitters, and a Luxardo cocktail cherry. Give it a try.

If you are someone who is not into mixed drinks but prefers to keep it as simple as possible, we have ice-cold beer, like Hamm’s and High Life. The bartender will even pop the top for you.

Quench Your Thirst and Enjoy Live Music

While the atmosphere is chill and the drinks are flowing, nothing at The Burgundy Lounge is complete without live music. And you can find it here nearly every day they are open — Wednesday through Saturday.

Those who have witnessed the local live bands and DJs are in awe of the high-quality sound they produce. Your ears will dance to the sound of old-school classics and lots of soul. You may even want to dust off your blue suede shoes.

Who’s Invited to The Burgundy Lounge?

The Burgundy Lounge welcomes everyone. In years gone by you may have needed a motel reservation to loosen your tie at the bar, but not today. The new owners are all about community and bringing people together.

After all, a place as hip as the Starlight Motor Inn and The Burgundy Lounge should not be kept secret.
